PARCELS return home for their first run of live shows since relocating to Berlin, signing with mega-hip Paris label K I T S U N E and creating waves of buzz across Europe with their harmony rich, funk-pop sound. They release new single Gamesofluck in time for their touchdown on hometurf.
It’s been a massive two years for the young Byron Bay band. They’ve released 3 tracks – ‘My Enemy’, ‘Another Clock’ and ‘Herefore’ (with remix EP), racked up over a million plays across platforms, performed over 40 shows (Fusion Festival, MS Dockville Festival, Reeperbahn Festival, Juicy Beats, Calvi on the rocks, Festival LesInrocks Paris, Lollapalooza After Party in Berlin to name a few). Les InRocks magazine described their sound as what you’d get if ‘a humanized Daft Punk would decide to jam with Steely Dan and Frank Ocean’.
Formed as PARCELS in 2014, Patrick Hetherington, Louie Swain, Noah Hill, Anatole Serret and Jules Crommelin forged a tight musical bond in the years previous, performing in an array of projects ranging from metal bands to folk ensembles. Thereafter the broad spectrum of the members’ influences and sensitivities jelled in a unique blend of contemporary electronica and matured funk disco, where wide synth soundscapes and an electronic rhythm section meet spirited guitars and five part vocal harmony. On stage, their live set is consistently energetic : a different, more organic spin on their tracks provides an electronic disco channeling the soulfulness of early Chic. Captivating, vital, and musically impressive. The five piece formed during the final stretch of high school and spent the remainder of the year between bedroom studios and dimly lit garages recording their first, self-produced EP. Shortly after, all five members left the sunny shores of their coastal hometown for Europe’s hub of musical inspiration, Berlin. With a one way ticket, keyboards and minimal funds, the tedious task of relocation was undertaken.
The bold action of moving to the other half of the world paid off as the quintet’s synth loaded funk caught the eye of ever curious label Kitsuné. Soon enough they met Gildas Loaec, founder of Kitsuné, and were welcomed with open arms to the foxy family. Now officially signed to the Parisian label, firmly footed in Berlin, Parcels are escaping the European winter for an Australian summer tour. Smart boys.
The new single, Gamesofluck is a driving pop song with a classic electro-disco groove fronted by Parcels’ funky vocal harmonies. A modern take on an early 80s Miami dance track, the song finds its foundation in a throwback feel, classic drum machine beats and catchy bass lines. The groove drives its way through moody sunset beach parties with layers of distant synths, percussion and an atmosphere of cocaine fuelled flirting. The vocals simultaneously grow from a brooding verse melody to a strong five man vocal chorus.
Though there is a dangerously vintage feel, Gamesofluck is strapped against a fresh sound with close, dry vocal tones, precise guitar lines and modern nuances. The result finds itself pleasurably lodged between a classic feel good dance track and a modern mellow pop song.
The second single from Parcels’ upcoming EP builds on their confident new sound while also portraying the band’s versatility in both production and songwriting.
